Concert Band
(Intermediate Band)

Class Description

The concert band is made up primarily of Freshmen and those students who wish to further develop the technical skills needed for Advanced Band. Concerts and other scheduled performances are a major part of the course. This course satisfies the Visual and Performing Arts requirement for the University of California and California State University systems.

Prerequisite: One year of previous band experience (Beginners may be accepted with instructor approval)

Class Syllabus

Course Objective

In the Concert Band, students will be taught fundamental and advanced techniques applicable to their instruments, and will be expected to demonstrate these techniques thorugh rehearsal and performance. Each course will rigorously adhere to the new San Mateo Union High School Disctrict Visual and Performing Arts Standards. Aesthetic perception and artistic expression of music will be the ultimate goals of all performing classes.

Discipline Policy

Students are expected to follow all school rules as well as to show respect for their director and their peers. Disruption of rehearsals and negative attitudes toward learning are not aceptable behaviors for musicians.

Grading Policy

Students wil lbe evaluted in five major areas, each comprising 20% of the student's grade:

  1. Attendance:

    Musicians must learn the importance of attending all rehearsals and performances. You are never excused for missing a perofrmance. Exceptions can only be made if two weeks prior notice is given in writing. It is especially important to attend class on time. I strictly enforce the school's tardy policy. In addition, three tardies will result in the lowering of your attendance grade by one full mark (an 'A' to a 'B'). Detentions may be served to make up these tardies. Attendance grades will reflect the student's compliance with these guidelines.

  2. Assignments and Projects:

    Students will be expected to complete all assignments and projects to meet course requirments and district standards. Detailed grading instructions and rubrics will be used in evaluation.

  3. Tests:

    Students will be tested periodically either in an audition situation or by written/oral tests. Aural evaluations will be based on the SMUHSD's Audition Rubric.

  4. Performances:

    Musicians must learn that they are expected to perform at their highest level at all times. The quality of a student's performance will be evaluated throughout the year.

  5. Journal:

    Students will purchase and maintain a 3-ring binder journal throughout the year and will receive writing prompts on a periodic basis. This will be kept in the music building.

Traditional Percentage Point Scale (A=100-90%; B=89-80%; C=79-70%; D=69-60%; F= 59% and below)

  1. Artistic Perception - Students recognize, notate, identify and analyze essential elements of music using appropriate skills and terminology.
  2. Creative Expression - Students synthesize and apply learned skills and knowledge in performing a varied repertoire of music. They compose, arrange and improvise music using state-of-the-art technology when appropriate.
  3. Historical and Cultural Context - Students demonstrate knowledge and understand music from a variety of cultures and historical contexts. They analyze the role of music in past and present cultures throughout the world.
  4. Aesthetic Valuing - Students critically assess, respond to, and find meaning in the aesthetic dimensions of a musical work using language unique to music.
  5. Connections, Relations, Applications - Students apply what they learn in music across the curricula through written and oral expression. They learn about careers in and related to music.
  6. Performance Norms, Ethics and Etiquette - Students develop and apply habits and behaviors appropriate in individual and group settings. They develop competencies and creative skills in problem solving, communication, and management of time and resources that contribute to lifelong learning.
